Law Commission of Ontario: Case Study
Website Redesign and Rebuild
The Context
The Law Commission of Ontario (LCO) produces research and recommendations on complex legal and policy issues. The website is the primary way that work reaches the public. However, the previous site was cluttered, difficult to navigate, slow to load, and hard to maintain.
I led the redesign and rebuild of the site, focusing on clarity, structure, and long-term usability.
The Challenge
The existing site had grown over time without a consistent structure. Content was difficult to find, filtering was limited, and performance issues made the experience frustrating. Additionally, the French side of the website was out of sync with the English, and the branding and feel of the site evoked the print era rather than modern law reform.
The site needed to serve multiple audiences:
- policymakers and legal professionals
- members of the public
- internal staff
The new website had to better reflect the LCO's identity and balance depth of content with ease of access.
The Solution
To address these issues, I focused on restructuring the site from the ground up—both in how content is organized and how it’s managed behind the scenes.
I was responsible for:
- content migration and cleanup
- branding and theme implementation
- building custom content types
- implementing a filtering system
- aligning the English and French versions of the site
Projects and publications were reorganized into a clearer, more consistent system, making relationships between content easier to understand. Filtering was expanded so users can find publications by project, type, and date, reducing the friction of navigating a large body of material. The project pages were rewritten to improve clarity and readability.
The site was rebuilt using a lightweight, block-based WordPress setup, improving performance and removing unnecessary complexity. The content model was designed so non-technical staff can update and manage the site without relying on developers.
I worked closely with the LCO team to refine the structure and ensure the branding reflected the organization’s identity. Through iterative feedback, we arrived at a system that foregrounds the LCO’s work and supports how people actually use the site.
